An Alcohol Dependent Individual Registers For Rehabilitation, Gets Alcohol Detoxification and Treatment For His Alcohol Dependency and His Depression, and Begins to Live More Enthusiastically

Barry used to talk big to his pals how he could work at a forty hour per week job and get intoxicated almost every night. Unfortunately, after continuing this “party” lifestyle for roughly five-and-a-half years, he started to notice various alcohol related difficulties.

Barry Begins to Manifest Numerous Alcohol Related Issues

For example, he had a real difficult time getting up for work because he felt so exhausted when he got up. Not only this, but almost every morning Barry suffered from a nasty hangover. In short, the mixture of his hangovers and his lack of energy did not make it easy for him to get up and feel inspired to go to work. To make things more difficult, he recently got his second DUI in the past four months.

To complicate things further, at his place of employment his last two performance appraisals were not up to his usual high standards. And finally, his four-year relationship with his girlfriend had deteriorated due to his lack of patience, depression, financial difficulties, and his angry outbursts.

Though Barry was only twenty-nine years old, he simply began looking like he was in his mid forties. Sadly, this is what excessive and irresponsible drinking can do to an individual. And in all honesty he comprehended that he was suffering from the adverse outcomes of alcohol abuse or alcohol addiction and that he was too young to throw away his life to irresponsible and careless drinking. So at first he tried to drink in moderation. Sadly, he soon comprehended the fact that he lost all control after drinking his first alcoholic beverage. Stated more precisely, after his first drink he invariably proceeded to get drunk. Since this was a circumstance that was repeated over and over again, this concerned him greatly. In truth, he started to wonder if he was manifesting some of the signs of alcoholism and alcohol abuse.

Barry Makes up His Mind To Make an Appointment to See His Family Doctor

After going over his excessive alcohol ingestion and his abusive and unhealthy drinking with his girlfriend, he eventually decided to make an appointment to see his physician. When Barry saw his family doctor, he actually confirmed that he has been drinking in an excessive manner, that he may be manifesting alcoholic signs, and that he wants to abstain from drinking. He then mentioned that drinking in moderation doesn’t work well for him and, as a consequence, he wants to learn how he can live without drinking alcohol.

Barry also told his healthcare professional about his depression and how this mental health problem was negatively influencing his relationship with his lady friend. His physician referred Barry to Doctor Lattner, a drug and alcohol addiction psychiatrist, who influenced Barry to enter into an alcohol and drug treatment center as an in-patient for alcohol detoxification and alcohol rehab. Fortunately, Barry would also be able to get medical treatment for his depression at this treatment facility.

Refraining From Drinking Was the Best Decision Barry Had Ever Made

After three months of intensive rehab, Barry left the in-patient rehab clinic and continued his recovery via outpatient therapy and via going to local Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Encouraged to change his life in a more positive way, Barry went to a health store and bought some vitamins and a cookbook. He then joined a gym and started working out two or three times per week. Within five months Barry was a new man. He was eating nutritious meals, he wasn’t depressed anymore, he now looked younger than he was, he was in shape, and most important of all, he remained sober for several months. He also didn’t resort to angry outbursts, he became more patient, and he became a more loving individual in his relationship with his lady friend. Stated simply, abstaining from drinking was the best decision Barry had ever made.

The Alcohol Related Deaths and Alcohol Related Problems That Are Linked To Heavy and Excessive Drinking

How many individuals get injured or lose their lives in alcohol related traffic accidents every year? How many individuals face serious consequences in their lives because they received a DWI conviction? How many individuals lose their lives every year because of drinking problems? On an annual basis, how many alcoholics fail to get the professional alcohol treatment they require? How many children are born each year with fetal alcohol syndrome? How many individuals lose their lives each year from a condition that is one hundred percent preventable, such as alcohol poisoning? How many people’s lives are cut short due to irresponsible and destructive drinking? How many junior high, high school, and college students lose their lives every year due to an alcohol overdose? How many people are the victims of alcohol related violence or crime each and every year?

Why Would Anyone Want to Drink in a Hazardous and Abusive Manner?

So what’s the point in asking these questions? Basically to highlight the destructive and devastating nature of careless drinking. Indeed, and based on the above questions, I wonder why anyone would choose to drink in an abusive manner.

Stated more forcefully, with the host of relationship dilemmas, health problems, legal proceedings, financial issues, and employment difficulties that are correlated with alcohol addiction and chronic alcohol abuse, why would any individual with common sense want to drink in an excessive manner? In fact when some of the above topics are put under the microscope more closely, hazardous and careless drinking becomes more illogical and makes even less sense.

Wouldn’t you think that alcoholics would be able to see some of the alcohol symptoms that they manifest? In a similar manner doesn’t it seem logical to think that more families would involve themselves in an alcohol intervention for the individual in the household who is an alcoholic or an alcohol abuser? What is more, wouldn’t you think that people who drink irresponsibly would try to learn more about their drinking behavior by reading about various alcohol related statistics?

After reviewing the alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse research findings, the point is so significant that it needs to be said again: With all of the destructive and debilitating consequences that are directly or indirectly linked to continuous and repetitive alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction, why would any person want to engage in excessive and careless drinking?

What Can be Done About the Pervasive Nature of Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Dependency in the United States?

So what can be done about the widespread nature of alcohol abuse and alcoholism in our country?

  1. Our students need more relevant and more meaningful educational and preventative methods and approaches so that more students at all grade levels, including those at college, are “reached.
  2. In a similar manner, our students need to learn how to become problem solvers in life rather than getting easily drawn to the ”quick fix” and the “instant gratification” of a drug or alcohol abuse ”high” or “buzz”.
  3. Individuals who are alcohol abusers or alcohol dependent need to look at themselves in the mirror and ask why they are not getting the professional alcohol counseling they require.
  4. Society needs to get the message to more people about the dangerous and debilitating consequences of repeated and continuous drinking.

There’s Room For Optimism if Those Who Engage in Unhealthy and Abusive Drinking Can Become Persuaded to Get the Alcohol Rehab They Require

There’s a lot of room for optimism and hope if people can start drinking in moderation and those who engage in hazardous drinkingcan become persuaded to get the alcohol rehabilitation they need. Indeed, why put your loved ones through turmoil, suffering and pain because of your repeated and continuous drinking when you have the power to control your life by drinking in moderation or even refraining from drinking if you cannot control your drinking behavior?
